چکیده

We present a result of the quasar CO(J = 6− 5) observations of SDSSp J104433.04−012502.2 at z = 5.8. Ten-days observations with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array yielded an rms noise level of ∼ 2.1 mJy beam in a frequency range from 101.28 GHz to 101.99 GHz at a velocity resolution of 120 km s. No significant clear emission line was detected in the observed field and frequency range. Three sigma upper limit on the CO(J =6−5) luminosity of the object is 2.8 ×10 K km s pc, corresponding to a molecular gas mass of 1.2× 10M⊙, if a conversion factor of 4.5 M⊙ (K km s pc) is adopted. The obtained upper limit on CO luminosity is slightly smaller than those observed in quasars at z = 4− 5 toward which CO emissions are detected.

to appear in The Astronomical Journal Search for Molecular Gas in the quasar SDSS 1044-0125 at z=5.73

We report upper limits on CO J=2–1 and CO J=5–4 emission from the quasar SDSSp J104433.04-012502.2 at z = 5.73 from observations made with the Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland-Association Array. Previously reported limits on CO J=6–5 emission (Iwata et al. 2001) were obtained at z = 5.80, which is now thought to be off by 1%, and the observations likely missed the relevant redshifts for molecular gas...

What Is the Highest Plausible Redshift of Luminous Quasars?

The recent discoveries of luminous quasars at high redshifts imply that black holes more massive than a few billion solar masses have been assembled already when the universe was less than a billion years old. We show that the existence of these black holes is not surprising in popular hierarchical models of structure formation. For example, the black hole needed to power the quasar SDSS 1044-0...

Discovery of a Clustered Quasar Pair at Z ≈ 5: Biased Peaks in Early Structure Formation

We report a discovery of a quasar at z = 4.96 ± 0.03 within a few Mpc of the quasar SDSS 0338+0021 at z = 5.02 ± 0.02. The newly found quasar has the SDSS i and z magnitudes of ≈ 21.2, and an estimated absolute magnitude MB ≈ −25.2. The projected separation on the sky is 196 arcsec, and the redshift difference ∆z = 0.063±0.008. The probability of finding this quasar pair by chance in the absenc...

We review the properties of z > 5 galaxies studied with HST and with the Keck telescopes, and discuss the detectability of Lyα emission-line galaxies out to z ∼ 6.5 based on these data and ongoing narrowband imaging surveys. The brightest sources may show (R − Z) color breaks, although the high sky background at Z (λeff ≈ 9200 Å), makes such observations challenging for typical faint sources. K...

Hubble Advanced Camera for Surveys Observations of the Z = 6.42 Quasar Sdss J1148+5251: a Leak in the Gunn-peterson Trough

The Hubble Advanced Camera for Surveys has been used to obtain a narrow-band image of the weak emission peak seen at λ = 7205 Å in the Gunn-Peterson Lyβ absorption trough of the highest redshift quasar, SDSS J1148+5251. The emission looks perfectly point-like; there is no evidence for the intervening galaxy that we previously suggested might be contaminating the quasar spectrum. We derive a mor...
